בָּצַר
(1) to cut off, to cut away (Syr. Pael to shorten, diminish; ܒܨܝܺܪܳܐ diminished, small, low. Kindred roots are בָּצַל, בָּצַע, comp. the remarks on the power of the syllables בז, בץ, פץ, under the roots בזא, פצה, comp. בָּדַר I, 1.) It commonly refers to grapes and the vintage, and it is equivalent to, to gather the vintage of grapes, with an acc. Leviticus 25:5, 11 Leviticus 25:11 of a vineyard, Deuteronomy 24:21; Judges 9:27. Part. בּוֹצֵר “grape gatherer,” Jeremiah 6:9 pl. בּוֹצְרִים “grape gatherers,” metaph. used of enemies preparing destruction, Jeremiah 49:9; Obadiah 1:5 comp. בָּצִיר. Metaph. Psal. 76:13, יִבְצֹר רוּחַ נְגִידִים “he will cut off the spirit (break down the pride) of princes.”
(2) to restrain, withhold (see Niphal and בַּצֹּרֶת ), to make inaccessible. So Part. pass. בָּצוּר inaccessible, used of very high walls, Deuteronomy 28:52; Isaiah 2:15 of an inaccessible wood, Zechariah 11:2 כתיב; of cities very strongly fortified, Numbers 13:28; Deuteronomy 3:5; Joshua 14:12; 2 Samuel 20:6; Isaiah 25:2; Deuteronomy 1:28. Metaph. “hard to be understood,” Jeremiah 33:3.
(3) to cut out, dig out, used of metals, see בֶּצֶר.
Niphal pass. of Kal No. 2, to be restrained, hindered, difficult, inaccessible to any one, followed by מִן. Genesis 11:6, לֹא יִבָּצֵר מֵהֶם כֹּל אֲשֶׁר יָֽזְמוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת “nothing will be too hard for them which they purpose doing;” Job 42:2.
Piel causat. of Kal No. 2, to render a defence inaccessible, Jeremiah 51:53, also simply to fortify, to rebuild a wall, Isaiah 22:10.
