σείω; future σείσω (Hebrews 12:26 L T Tr WH); passive, present participle σειόμενος; 1 aorist ἐσείσθην; from Homer down; the Sept. chiefly for רָעַשׁ; to shake, agitate, cause to tremble: Revelation 6:13; τήν γῆν, Hebrews 12:26 after Haggai 2:6; ἐσείσθη ἡ γῆ, Matthew 27:51 (Judges 5:4; 2 Samuel 22:8); σεισθῆναι ἀπό φοβοῦ, of men, to be thrown into a tremor, to quake for fear, Matthew 28:4; metaphorically, to agitate the mind: ἐσείσθη ἡ πόλις (R. For the mid. σοφίζομαι, ";devise cleverly"; (2 Peter 1:16), cf. PSI V. 452.11 (iv/A.D.) μᾶλλον δὲ σοφιζομένους δύνασθαι ἐκκλείνειν [τὸν δεσμὸν ] τῆς δουλίας. See also the beginning of the uncanonical gospel P Oxy V. 840.1 (iv/A.D.) πρότερον πρὸ <τοῦ > ἀδικῆσαι πάντα σοφίζεται, ";before he does wrong makes all manner of subtle excuses"; (Edd.), Musonius p. 12.9 μελετῶσι λόγους καὶ σοφίζωνται καὶ ἀναλύωσι συλλογισμούς, and Vett. Val. p. 291.1 ἵνα δὲ μὴ δόξω πάλιν τὰ αὐτὰ σοφίζεσθαι.
