שָׁקַט fut. יִשְׁקֹט to rest, to have quiet (pr. to lie, to lie down; compare Arab. سقط to fall; kindred to סָכַת, سكت). It is used
(a) of one whom no one harasses, Judges 3:11, 5:31 8:28 Jeremiah 30:10, 46:27 (hence שָׁקַט מִמִּלְחָמָה Joshua 11:23, 14:15 ), and who harasses no one, Judges 18:7, 27 Judges 18:27 which sometimes arises from fear, Psalms 76:9.
(b) of a person who does nothing, remains inactive, Isaiah 62:1; Jeremiah 47:6 hence used of God when he does not afford aid, Psalms 83:2.
Hiphil
(1) to cause to be quiet, i.e. to allay strife, Proverbs 15:18 also, to make tranquil and secure, i.e. to give quiet, Job 34:29 followed by לְ of pers. and מִן of thing (from danger), Psalms 94:13.
(2) intrans. to keep oneself quiet (pr. to make oneself quiet, Ruhe beh fich hervorbringen, Ruhe halten), Isaiah 7:4, 57:20. Inf. הַשְׁקֵט subst. rest, quiet, Isaiah 30:15, 32:17. The earth is figuratively said to be quiet, when the air is sultry and unmoved (beh ftiller, fchwüler Luft), Job 37:17. Hence
