כָּהַן unused in Kal. Arab. كَهَنَ and كَهُنَ Conj. I. and V. to presage, to predict, كِهَازَةُ the art of augury, and كَاهِنُ a prophet, a soothsayer, often used amongst the heathen Arabs; hence, one who undertakes any one’s cause, his deputy, delegate, to use the words of Firuzabadi (Kamûs, p. 1799); مَنْ يَقُومُ بَامْرِ الرَّجُلِ ويسعى فىِ حَاجَته he who stands up in any one’s matter, and labours in his cause. The signification of priest is kindred in Heb. כֹּהֵן, inasmuch as prophets and priests were alike supposed to intercede between the gods and men. Syr. ܟܗܰܢ to be rich, opulent, ܟܰܗܝܺܢܐܳ rich, abundant, ܟܰܗܝܺܢܘܽܬܐܳ riches, abundance, glory; all which ideas are secondary, and appear to be deduced from the condition of the priests. (As to the signification of ministering, which has been inaccurately [?] attributed to this root, I have lately made observations, in pref. to Hebr. Lex. Germ. ed. III., p. xxxiii.)
