בָּגַד fut. יִבְגֹּד; once יִבְגַּד (Malachi 2:10), properly to cover (whence בֶּגֶד covering, garment); hence
(1) to act covertly, fraudulently, perfIdiously. (For verbs of covering, hiding are often applied to fraud and perfidy; compare لبس to cover, to clothe, to dissimulate, Sam. Obadiah 1:6 to defraud, construed with ב Exodus 21:8 קָבַע قبع to cover, to hide oneself, whence קֹבַע, also to defraud; compare מָעַל, דָּגַל and دجل, ختل). It is put absol. 1 Samuel 14:33; Job 6:15 more often followed by בְּ of pers. (comp. בְּ B, 6), “to forsake (some one) perfidiously,” Judges 9:23; Lamentations 1:2 namely, a friend, Lam.loc. cit.; a consort, Exodus 21:8 God, IIos. 5:7; 6:7; rarely followed by מִן Jeremiah 3:20 and an acc. Psalms 73:15, דוֹר בָּנֶיךָ בָגַדְתִּי הִנֵּה “behold I should deal falsely with the generation of thy chidren;” part. בּוֹגֵד; pl. בֹּגְדִים “those who perfidiously depart (from God),” i.e. the wicked (LXX. παράνομοι); Proverbs 2:22, 11:3, Proverbs 11:6, 13:2, 15 Proverbs 13:15; Psalms 25:3, 59:6 Jeremiah 9:1.
(2) to oppress, to afflict, to spoil, i.q. גָּזַלֶ, עָשַׁק, construed with בְּ; Isaiah 21:2, הַבּוֹגֵד בּוֹגֵד וְהַשּׁוֹדֵד שׁוֹדֵד “the spoiler spoils, and the waster wastes;” Isaiah 24:16, בֹּגְדִים בָּגָדוּ וּבֶגֶד בֹּגְדִים בָּגָדוּ “the spoilers spoil, and the spoilers spoil a spoiling,” Isaiah 33:1. Used of impudence, Habakkuk 2:5.
