Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שֹׁהַם m.

(1) a species of gem; according to many sardonyx or onyx, so called from its resemblance to a human nail, Genesis 2:12; Exodus 28:9, 20 Exodus 28:20, 35:9, 27 Exodus 35:27; Job 28:16; Ezekiel 28:13. See Braun, De Vestitu Sacerd. Hebr. ii. 18. J. D. Michaëlis (Supplemm. p. 2289) supposes it to be the onyx with whitish lines, comparing the Arab. مُسَهَّمُ a striped garment.
