קִרְיָה f. a city, a town, i.q. עִיר, but used almost exclusively in poetry, Isaiah 1:21, 26 22:2 25:2 26:5 32:13 Psalms 48:3; Proverbs 10:15; Job 39:7 see, however, Deuteronomy 2:36; 1 Kings 1:41, 45 1 Kings 1:45. (Syriac ܩܪܐܶ id., Arabic قَرْيَةُ, قُرْيَةُ a city, also a village). Root קָרָה Piel, to frame, to build. Compare קֶרֶת.

Proper names of towns are:

(a) קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע [Kirjath-arba], Genesis 23:2; Joshua 15:54, 20:7 with art. קִרְיַת הָאַרְבַּע Nehemiah 11:25 (i.e. city of Arba, one of the Anakim, see אַרְבַּע, not Quadricomium, four towns), the ancient name of Hebron, but still used in the time of Nehemiah (Neh. loc. cit.).

(b) קִרְיַת בַּעַל [Kirjathbaal], the town which is more frequently called קִרְיַת יְעָרִים (see letter d), Joshua 15:60, 18:14 and בַּעֲלָה No. 2, a.

(c) קִרְיַת־חֻצוֹת (town of villages), [Kirjathhuzoth], a town of the Moabites, Numbers 22:39.

(d) קִרְיַת־יְעָרִים (city of the woods), [Kirjath-jearim], on the confines of the tribe of Judah and Benjamin, Joshua 9:17, 18:15 Judges 18:12; 1 Samuel 6:21 with art. קִרְיַת הַיְּעָרִים, Jeremiah 26:20 contractedly קִרְיַת־עָרִים Ezra 2:25 and even קִרְיַת, Joshua 18:28 elsewhere also קִרְיַת־בַּעַל, see letter b.

(e) קִרְיַת־סַנָּה, Joshua 15:49 (city of palm-trees, compare סַנְסִנִּים), [Kirjath-sannah], and קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר (city of books), [Kirjath-sepher], in the tribe of Judah, elsewhere דְּבִיר, Joshua 15:15, 16 Joshua 15:16; Judges 1:11, 12 Judges 1:12.

(f) קִרְיַת עָרִים, [Kirjath-arim], see letter d.

(g) קִרְיָתַיִם (double city), [Kiriathaim]

(a) in the tribe of Reuben, Numbers 32:37; Joshua 13:19 afterwards subject to Moab, Jeremiah 48:1, 23 Jeremiah 48:23; Ezekiel 25:9.

(β) in the tribe of Naphtali, 1 Chronicles 6:6 elsewhere קַרְתָּן.
