(1) pr. to expand, to spread out, to extend (Syriac ܦܫܰܛ; Arabic بسط; cogn. to פָּטַשׁ No. 1, 2); always intrans., to spread oneself out; used of hostile troops, 1 Chronicles 14:9, 13 1 Chronicles 14:13 of a swarm of locusts, Nahum 3:16 followed by עַלּ of the land or people; to rush upon, to attack (in order to take booty), Job 1:17; Judges 9:33, 44 Judges 9:44 also followed by אֶל 1 Samuel 27:8 בְּ 2 Chronicles 25:13, 28:18 accus. 1 Samuel 30:14.
(2) to put off a garment (which is done with opening and unfolding it, as on the other hand a garment is bound together when put on; compare פַּטִּישׁ); followed by an acc., Leviticus 6:4, 16:23 Song of Solomon 5:3, etc. Absol. פְּשֹׁטָה strip off (garments)! Isaiah 32:11.
Piel, to cause to put off, i.e. to spoil the slain, 1 Samuel 31:8; 2 Samuel 23:10; 1 Chronicles 10:8.
