(1) to cook, to bake, specially bread or cake in an oven. (Chald., Syr. id. Arab. وفى, whence مِيفًى oven. In the western languages, ἕψω, ὁπτάω, πέπτω; Lat. epulœ, epulari), Genesis 19:3; Leviticus 26:26; Isaiah 44:15, 19 Isaiah 44:19. Followed by two accusatives, one of the material, the other of that which is made from it. Leviticus 24:5, וְאָפִיתָ אֹתָהּ שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂוֵה חַלּוֹת “and bake thereof twelve cakes,” compare Lehrgeb. § 219. Part. אֹפֵה a baker, Genesis 40:1. שַׂר הָאֹפִים “chief of the bakers,” a courtier of the king of Egypt (Genesis 40:2, seqq.); a dignity which also exists amongst the Moguls.
(2) to be cooked; hence, complete, whole (Germ. gar fehn). Compare Arab. وفى to be whole, complete; وَفىُِّ whole, complete; وَافيًا wholly, and altogether, ganz und gar. See deriv. אַף No. I. [(2) is omitted in Ges. corr.]
