פָּגַע
(1) to strike upon, or against, pepigit, ftoffen, fchlagen. (I have used this Latin word on purpose because it is of the same stock; compare also the kindred pax for pacs, paciscor, Greek πηγνύω, Germ. pochen, and those which are allied to this, boken, Bock, from the idea of striking or pushing. Of the same termination is the root נָגַע; compare פָּגַשׁ and נָגַשׁ). Followed by בְּ to strike upon any person or thing (auf, an etwas ftoffen), whether of set purpose or accidentally, whether violently or lightly; hence
(a) to rush on any one with hostile violence, 1 Samuel 22:17, 18 1 Samuel 22:18; Ruth 2:22 especially in order to kill; hence to kill, to slay, Judges 8:21, 15:12 2 Samuel 1:15. Once followed by an acc. of person and בְּ of thing; Exodus 5:3, פֶּן יִפְגָּעֵנוּ בַּדֶּבֶר “lest he fall upon us with the pestilence.”
(b) in a good sense to assail any one with petitions, to urge him; followed by בְּ Ruth 1:16; Jeremiah 7:16, 27:18 Job 21:15 and לְ of the person for whom any one asks or intercedes, Genesis 23:8.
(c) to light upon any one, to meet with him, followed by בְּ Genesis 28:11, 32:2 Numbers 35:19, 21 Numbers 35:21 (also with an acc. Exodus 23:4; 1 Samuel 10:5; Amos 5:19).
(d) to reach to any one, followed by בְּ Joshua 16:7, 17:10 19:11, 22 Joshua 19:22, 26 Joshua 19:26, 27 Joshua 19:27, 34 Joshua 19:34(followed by אֶל Joshua 19:11).
(2) to strike a covenant with any one, pactus est (from paciscor), to make peace with him, followed by אֵת. I now consider that two passages in Isaiah should be thus explained, which have been variously treated by interpreters; Isaiah 64:4, פָּגַעְתָּ אֶת־שָׂשׂ וְעֹשֵׂה צֶדֶק “thou makest peace with him who rejoiceth to work righteousness,” i.e. thou art in league with the man who loves justice, and thou delightest in him; similar is אִישׁ בְּרִיתְךָ, אִישׁ שְׁלוֹמְךָ. Without אֵת Isaiah 47:3, “I will take vengeance וְלֹא אֶפְגַּע אָדָם and will not make peace with any man,” I will grant peace to none till all are destroyed. The signification of strking is referred to that of making peace, as shown by the Latin words pango, paciscor, and also by the Heb. and Arabic שָׂפַק (Isaiah 2:6), صفق, سفق and Lat. ferire, percutere fœdus.
Hiphil
(1) causat, of Kal No. 1, a, to cause anything to fall upon any one. Isaiah 53:6, הִפְגִּיעַ בּוֹ אֵת עֲוֹן כֻּלָּנוּ “he caused to fall upon him the iniquity of us all”.
(2) causat, of Kal No. 1, b, to cause to supplicate. Jeremiah 15:11, הִפְגַּעְתִּי בְךָ … אֶת־הָאֹיֵב “I will make the enemy to make supplication to thee.” So (following the Chaldee), Lud. de Dieu, Rosenm.
(3) intrans.
(a) i.q. Kal No. 1, a, to invade. Part. מַפְגִּיעַ assailant, enemy, Job 36:32.
(b) i.q. Kal No. 1, b, to assail any one with prayers; followed by בְּ Jeremiah 36:25 also followed by לְ of the person for whom intercession is made, Isaiah 53:12 absol. Isaiah 59:16.
