Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition
עֲרָפֶל m. quadrilitt. darkness of clouds, thick clouds, Exodus 20:21; Deuteronomy 4:11; 1 Kings 8:12; Psalms 18:10. Syr. ܥܰܪܦܶܠܳ id., ܐܬܶܥܰܪܦܰܠ to make dark. Blended apparently from the triliterals עָרִיף a cloud, and אָפַל to be dark. To this corresponds the Greek ὀρφνός, obscure, dark, ὄρφνη, darkness, especially of the night.
