נָגַשׂ fut. יִגֹּשׂ (once יִנְגּוֹשׂ Isaiah 58:3), [“Arabic نجش”] to impel, to urge, to drive
(1) a labourer to work, Isaiah 58:3. Whence part. נוֹגֵשׂ a taskmaster, ἐργοδιώκτης, Exodus 3:7; Job 3:18 also followed by בְּ, hence נֹגֵשׂ בּוֹ Isaiah 9:3 used of a driver of animals, Job 39:7.
(2) to urge a debtor, to demand a debt, with an acc. of pers. Deuteronomy 15:2, Deuteronomy 15:3 to demand tribute, followed by two acc. of the tribute and those on whom it is levied, 2 Kings 23:35 part. נוֹגֵשׂ an exactor of tribute, Daniel 11:20.
(3) to reign, to rule, part. נוֹגֵשׂ a ruler, a tyrant, Isaiah 3:12, 14:2 60:17 Zechariah 10:4. Ethiop. ነገሠ፡ id. whence ንጉሥ፡ and ነጋሢ፡ a king; ንጉሠ፡ ነገሥት፡ king of kings, a title of the king of Ethiopia.
