1012) la (אל AL) AC: Yoke CO: Ox AB: Strength: The pictograph a is a picture of an ox head and also represents its strength. The l is a picture of a shepherd staff and also represents the authority of the shepherd. Combined these two pictographs mean "the strong authority" and can be anyone or thing of strong authority. The yoke is understood as a "staff on the shoulders" (see Isaiah 9:4) in order to harness their power for pulling loads such as a wagon or plow. Hence, the two pictographs can also represent "the ox in the yoke". Often two oxen were yoked together. An older, more experienced ox would be teamed up (yoked) with a younger, less experienced ox. The older ox in the yoke is the "strong authority" who, through the yoke, teaches the younger ox. (eng: all; elk; elephant)

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

יָאַל prop. וָאַל unused in Kal, to be foolish, i.q. אָוַל which see. [“The primary idea appears to be that of perverseness, i.q. עָוַל.”]

Niphal נוֹאַלּ to be foolish, Numbers 12:11; Jeremiah 5:4 to act as a fool, Isaiah 19:13. Jeremiah 50:36, חֶרֶב אֶל־הַבַּדִּים וְנֹאָלוּ “the sword (is) upon the lying (prophets), and they shall act as fools” (comp. הוֹלֵל Job 12:17; Isaiah 44:25).

II.

יָאַל unused in Kal, kindred to אוּל, אִיל Arab. أَوِلَ to go before, to be first. [In Thes. the meaning of this root is given “properly to will, to wish.”]

Hiphil הוֹאִיל to begin [“to wish, to will,” Thes.], Deuteronomy 1:5; Hosea 5:11; Joshua 17:12, וַיּוֹאֶל הַכְּנַעֲנִי לָשֶׁבֶת בָּאָרֶץ “and the Canaanites began to dwell together (to set their feet) in the land.” Judges 1:27, 35 Judges 1:35. Sometimes it is used with a more emphatic sense, to undertake, to endeavour, Genesis 18:27, 31 Genesis 18:31 also of him who yields to the prayers of others, and does something, to be willing, to be pleased to do something, Judges 17:11, 19:6, הוֹאֶלּ־נָא וְלִין “be content now, and lodge.” Exodus 2:21; 2 Samuel 7:29; 2 Kings 5:23; Job 6:9, 28 Job 6:28. Construed with a gerund after it, Joshua 17:12; Judges 1:35 or with a finite verb sometimes joined by a conjunction (Judges 19:6 ), sometimes without one, ἀσυνδετῶς (Deuteronomy 1:5; Hosea 5:11). [Note in Ges. add. all these passages are referred to the idea of to will, to wish, either in the sense of undertaking what is wished, as Genesis 18:27, 31 Genesis 18:31; Joshua 17:12; Judges 1:27, 35 Judges 1:35; 1 Samuel 17:39 or in the sense of being willing to yield to another, as Job 6:28; 2 Kings 6:3.]
