A green branch still contains water allowing the branch to be flexible. A green branch can then be bent to the desired shape and left to dry.

מַטָּה (Milêl) adv. downward, beneath, below, Deuteronomy 28:43; Proverbs 15:24. Opp. to מַעְלָה above. (This word has not sprung from מַטֶּה itself, but, as it appears from the acute penultima, from the shortened form מַט bending, a low place, with the addition of ה local.) With prefixes
(1) לְמַטָּה
(a) downward, Deuteronomy 28:13; Ezekiel 1:27; 2 Kings 19:30; Jeremiah 31:37; Ecclesiastes 3:21.
