ὑπολείπω, also ὑπολειπ-λιμπάνω (q. v.), leave remaining, ἅ ῥα τῇ προτέρῃ ὑπέλειπον ἔδοντες Od. 16.50; ὑ. λόγον αὐτοῖς, ὡς.. οἷοί τ' ἔσονται Th. 8.2 (cf. infr. 111); πολεμίους τινὰς ὑ. Id. 6.17; τὸν πόλεμον τοῖς παισί Id. 1.81; οὐδεμίαν ὑπερβολὴν ὑ. τινί leave him no possibility of exceeding, Isoc. 6.105 (f.l. for κατα-) ; τοῖς ἔγγιστα τιμωρεῖσθαι ὑ. Antipho 4.4.11.
2. of things, fail one, ὑπολείψει ὑμᾶς ἡ μισθοφορά Lys. 27.1 (ἐπι- Reiske, Hude), cf. Arr. Ind. 26.9 (ἐπι- Ellendt); ὑ. τινὰ ὁ λόγος Gorg. 17; ὑπολείποι γὰρ ἂν ὁ αἰὼν διαριθμοῦντα Arist. Rh. 1374a33; [ τὰ ὕδατα] ὑ. τινάς Id. Pol. 1330b7.
3. intr., fail, fall short, θεοὶ.. ὑπέλιπον οὐ πώποκα Epich. 170.1; ὅταν ὑπολίπωσιν αἱ βάλανοι Arist. HA 615b22; ὑ. τὸ μέλι ib. 626b6; αἱ τρίχες Id. GA 745a15, cf. PA 650a36 (c. dat.); ἡ φωνὴ ὑπολελοίπει had ceased, Hp. Epid. 5.10, etc.: also, fail in what is expected of one, come short, Lys. 31.4 (ὑπολίπωμαι codd.).
II Pass., c. fut. Med., to be left remaining, ἐν μεγάρῳ ὑπελείπετο he was left behind.., Od. 7.230, cf. Hdt. 1.105, 2.15, 86; ἐγὼ δ' ὑπολείψομαι αὐτοῦ Od. 17.276, 282, etc.; ὑπολειφθείς Hdt. 5.61, 8.67, X. HG 4.1.39, cf. Isoc. 4.70.
2. of things, πέμπτον δ' ὑπελείπετ' ἄεθλον Il. 23.615; ἐμοὶ δ' ἅπαξ ἀποφυγόντι ὁ αὐτὸς κίνδυνος ὑπολείπεται Antipho 5.16; μὴ ὑπολείπεσθαι [τοὺς νόμους], εἴ ποτε.. so that they do not remain in force, in case that.., Th. 3.84; οὐδὲν ὑπολείπεται ἀλλ' ἢ.. Pl. Phdr. 231b; μηκέτι ὑπολείπεσθαι αὐτοῖς περὶ μηθενὸς ἔνκλημα μηθέν SIG 712.29 (Crete, ii B. C.).
3. c. gen., ὑπολείπεσθαι τοῦ στόλου stay behind the expedition, i. e. not to go upon it, Hdt. 1.165, cf. A. Ag. 73 (anap.).
4. to be left behind in a race, Ar. Ra. 1092; lag behind, κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν πορεύεσθαι -όμενον Pl. Smp. 174d; of stragglers in an army, X. An. 1.2.25, etc.; ὑ. μικρὸν τοῦ στόματος fall behind the front rank, ib. 5.4.22 (s. v.l.); of fixed stars, lie to the East of a point in the celestial sphere, Hipparch. 3.5.6, al.; of the apparent motion of planets, Arist. Mete. 343a24, al., cf. Epicur. Ephesians 2 p.53 U, Gem. 12.22, Ptol. Alm. 12.1, Theo Sm.p.147 H.
5. metaph., to be inferior, ταῖς ἡλικίαις τῶν πατέρων Arist. Pol. 1334b39, cf. 1254b35.
6. abs., fail, come to an end, ὁπόταν.. νὺξ ὑπολειφθῇ S. El. 91 (anap.), cf. Arist. Mete. 356b5, al.
III Med., leave behind one, τὰ πρόβατα Hdt. 4.121; μηδεμίαν τῶν νεῶν Id. 6.7; ὑ. τούτων ὡς χιλίους leaving about 1000 of them unburied, Id. 8.24; ὑπολείπεσθαι αἰτίαν, ὡς.. to leave cause for reproach against oneself, in thinking that.., Th. 1.140 (v. sub init.); πόνους Isoc. 9.45.
2. retain, [ τοῦ ὕδατος] περὶ ἑωυτόν Hdt. 2.25; δόρυ ἓν ὧν ἔσχον Arr. Tact. 4.6, cf. 39.1; reserve, ἑαυτῷ ἑκατὸν ἅρματα LXX 2 Kings 8:4; σαυτῷ ταύτην τὴν ὄλυραν PHib. 1.50.4 (iii B. C.); τὸν ὑπάρχοντα χόρτον τοῖς προβάτοις PCair.Zen. 645.6 (iii B. C.); ὑπολιποῦ τόπον leave a space, ib. 327.83 (iii B. C.): but in D. 18.219 the Act. ὑπέλειπε.. ἑαυτῷ.. ἀναφοράν (left himself a means of escape) is the best reading.
3. deduct from a payment, IG 7.3073.50,56 (Lebad., ii B. C.): — Pass., ib.58; ὑπολειπέσθω τῆς τιμῆς τὸ ὀφειλόμενον Philol. 83.204 (Euboea, iii B. C.).
ὑπολείπω: 1 aorist passive ὑπελείφθην; from Homer down; the Sept. for הִשְׁאִיר and הותִיר; to leave behind (see ὑπό, III. 1); passive, to be left behind, left remaining, the Sept. for נִשְׁאַר and נותַר: used of a survivor, Romans 11:3.
