The use of ἀ. in Acts 12:4 finds a ready parallel in Syll 366.24 (i/A.D.) ἀναχθέντα εἰς τὸν δῆμον ἐὰν μὲν πολείτης ᾖ, ἀποξενοῦσθαι. For the meaning ";restore,"; ";bring back,"; cf. P Par 10.12 τοῦτον ὃς ἂν ἀναγάγῃ, with reference to a runaway slave, and Wilcken’s restoration (Archiv iv. p. 548) of P Lond 921.5 (ii/iiiA.D.) (= III. p. 134) ἀναγαγεῖν ε [ἰς ἄμπελον ] of bringing back certain arouras to use as a vineyard. See the editor’s note on P Oxy VII. 1032.8 (A.D. 162) ἀνη ̣ξ ̣α ̣μ ̣εν κτλ. ";we converted out of our own ancient plots . . . 7/16 of an aroura of vine-land,"; and ib. IV. 707.23 (c. A.D. 136) γῆν ἀνάξαι ἀμπέλῳ. (On the vulgar 1st aor. see above under ἄγω.) P Flor II. 134.6 (A.D. 260) ἵν [α ] τὸ ἀναγόμενον ἐν Βουβάστῳ κτημάτιον ὑποσχισθῇ, is rendered by Comparetti ";perchè la terra annessa in Bubasto venga dissodata."; Syll 936.6 καὶ καταβαλέτω τὰμ πεντηκοστὰν π [ρὶ ]ν ἀνάγειν τι ἢ πωλεῖν seems to mean ";before he brings (the merchandise) into the town or sells it,"; i.e. ";bring up"; from the landing stage. The familiar use of ἀνάγειν for ";putting out to sea"; is found in BGU IV. 1200.14 (B.C. 1) τοῦ τὴν πρόσοδον ἀνη ̣γ ̣μ ̣ένου εἰς Ἰτ ̣αλίαν, modified in a transitive direction. For its sacrificial use (as in Acts 7:41) cf. OGIS 764.47 (c. B.C. 127) ἀναγαγὼν ἐκ τοῦ ἰδίου ταύρους δύο καὶ καλλιερή [σας κτλ. : so elsewhere in this inscr. (= Cagnat IV. 294).
