Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἐντολή is used of a royal ";ordinance"; of Euergetes II. in P Tebt I. 6.10 (B.C. 140) ὑποτετάχα ]μεν δὲ καὶ τῆς παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως [καὶ τῶν βασιλισσῶν παραδεδο ]μένης περὶ τῶν ἀνηκόντων [τοῖς ἱεροῖς κομίζεσθαι ἐ ]ντολῆς τὸ ἀντίγραφον, and in Par 65.18 (B.C. 146), the writer, after informing Ptolemy Philometor that he had executed certain instructions regarding Egyptian contracts, adds—ἡ μὲν ἐντολὴ ἐγδέδοται ἡμῖν εἰς τὴν Λ ̄ τοῦ Ἀθύρ : cf. P Lille I. 3.55 (c. B.C. 240) ἐν (τολὴ) τοῖς ἐλαιοκαπήλοις, ";circulaire aux revendeurs"; (Ed.). From Roman times we may cite the reference to Imperial ordinances—ταῖς θειαῖς ἐντολαῖς in an inscr. from Bulgaria, Syll 418.51 (A.D. 238) : cf. 1 Corinthians 7:19 al. Other more general exx. are P Ryl II. 81.22 (the letter of an official—c. A.D. 104) μεμνῆσ [θαί μ ]ο ̣υ ̣ τῆς γενομένη [ς ] αὐτῷ ἐντολῆς, BGU II. 600.6 (ii/iii A.D.) ἐνμένω πᾶσι ταῖς προγεγραμέν [α ]ις [ἐν ]τολαῖς [κ ]αθὼς πρό [κι ]ται, and P Tebt II. 413.7 (ii/iii A.D.) μὴ δόξῃς με, κυρί [α ], ἠμεληκέναι σου τῶν ἐντολῶν —the letter perhaps of a slave to her mistress. For κατὰ τ. . cf. PSI III. 236.5 (iii/iv A.D.)
