A mental attitude opposed to certitude and error, in which the mind fluctuates between two contradictory propositions, suspending judgment because of fear of error. The term includes all states intermediate between ignorance and certitude. If the judgment is suspended because the regions on either side are equally balanced, the doubt is positive; if this be due to the fact that valid reasons are absent on both sides, the doubt is negative.
