Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible Commentary Critical
Search for "Genesis"
Genesis 50:1 1. Joseph fell upon his father's
face, &c.—On him, as the principal member of the family,
devolved the duty of closing the eyes of his venerable parent
(compare Genesis 46:4) and imprinting
the farewell kiss.
Genesis 50:26 26. and they embalmed him—[See
on Genesis 50:5]. His funeral would
be conducted in the highest style of Egyptian magnificence and his
mummied corpse carefully preserved till the Exodus.
Job 38:33 33. ordinances—which regulate
the alternations of seasons, c. ( :-).
dominion—controlling
influence of the heavenly bodies, the sun, moon, &c., on the
earth (on the tides, weather) (Genesis 1:16
Psalms 136:7-9).
Psalms 121:6 6-8. God keeps His people at all
times and in all perils.
nor the moon by
night—poetically represents the dangers of the night, over
which the moon presides (Genesis 1:16).
Psalms 19:1 1. the glory of God—is the sum
of His perfections (Psalms 24:7-10;
Romans 1:20).
firmament—another word
for "heavens" (Genesis 1:8).
handywork—old
English for "work of His hands."
Psalms 37:26 26. his seed is blessed—literally,
"for a blessing" (Genesis 12:2;
Psalms 21:6). This position is still
true as the rule of God's economy (1 Timothy 4:8;
1 Timothy 6:6).
Psalms 78:67 67, 68. tabernacle of Joseph—or,
"home," or, "tribe," to which—
tribe of Ephraim—is
parallel (compare Revelation 7:8). Its
pre-eminence was, like Saul's, only permitted. Judah had been the
choice (Genesis 49:10).
Psalms 78:9 9-11. The privileges of the
first-born which belonged to Joseph (1 Chronicles 5:1;
1 Chronicles 5:2) were assigned to Ephraim
by Jacob (Genesis 48:1). The
supremacy of the tribe thus intimated was recognized by its position
(in the marching of the nation to Canaan) next to the ark (Genesis 48:1- :), by the selection of the first permanent locality for
the ark within its borders at Shiloh,
Proverbs 23:31 31. when . . . red—the color
denoting greater strength (compare Genesis 49:11;
Deuteronomy 32:14).
giveth . . . cup—literally,
"gives its eye," that is, sparkles.
moveth . . . aright—Perhaps
its foaming is meant.
Isaiah 53:10 voluntarily borne by Messiah, in
order that thereby He might "do Jehovah's will"
(John 6:38; Hebrews 10:7;
Hebrews 10:9), as to man's
redemption; so at the end of the verse, "the pleasure of the
LORD shall prosper in His
hand."
bruise—(see Hebrews 10:9- :); Genesis 3:15, was hereby
fulfilled, though the Hebrew word for "bruise,"
there, is not the one used here. The word "Himself," in
Matthew, implies a personal bearing on Himself of our
maladies, spiritual and physical, which included as a consequence
His
Jeremiah 29:22 22. shall be taken . . . a
curse—that is, a formula of imprecation.
Lord make thee like
Zedekiah—(Compare Genesis 48:20;
Isaiah 65:15).
roasted in the fire—a
Chaldean punishment (Daniel 3:6).
Jeremiah 33:25 25. (Jeremiah 31:35;
Jeremiah 31:36; Genesis 8:22;
Psalms 74:16; Psalms 74:17).
I who have established the laws of nature am the same God who has
made a covenant with the Church.
Ezekiel 1:6 execute His commands. The face expresses
their intelligence; the wings, their rapidity in fulfilling God's
will. The Shekinah or flame, that signified God's presence, and the
written name, JEHOVAH,
occupied the intervening space between the cherubim Genesis 4:14;
Genesis 4:16; Genesis 3:24
("placed"; properly, "to place in a tabernacle"),
imply that the cherubim were appointed at the fall as symbols of
God's presence in a consecrated place, and that man was to worship
there. In the patriarchal dispensation
Ezekiel 16:8 8. thy time of love—literally,
"loves" (compare :-). Thou wast of marriageable age, but none was willing to
marry thee, naked as thou wast. I then regarded thee with a look of
grace when the full time of thy deliverance was come (Genesis 15:13;
Genesis 15:14; Acts 7:6;
Acts 7:7). It is not she that
makes the advance to God, but God to her; she has nothing to entitle
her to such notice, yet He regards her not with mere benevolence, but
with love, such as one cherishes to the person
Ezekiel 27:14 14. Togarmah—Armenia:
descended from Gomer (Genesis 10:3).
Their mountainous region south of the Caucasus was celebrated for
horses.
horsemen—rather,
"riding-horses," as distinct from "horses" for
chariots [FAIRBAIRN].
Deuteronomy 34:8 8. wept for Moses . . . thirty
days—Seven days was the usual period of mourning, but for
persons in high rank or official eminence, it was extended to thirty
(Genesis 50:3-10; Numbers 20:29).
1 Timothy 2:15 is a reference to the
Incarnation "through THE
child-bearing" (Greek), the bearing of the child Jesus.
Doubtless this is the ground of women's child-bearing in
general becoming to them a blessing, instead of a curse; just as in
the original prophecy (Genesis 3:15;
Genesis 3:16) the promise of "the
Seed of the woman" (the Saviour) stands in closest connection
with the woman's being doomed to "sorrow" in "bringing
forth children," her very child-bearing, though in
sorrow, being the function assigned
1 Timothy 4:15 15. Meditate—Greek,
"Meditate CAREFULLY
upon" (Psalms 1:2;
Psalms 119:15; compare "Isaac,"
Genesis 24:63).
these things— (Genesis 24:63- :). As food would not nourish without digestion, which
assimilates the food to the substance of the body, so spiritual food,
in order to benefit us, needs to be appropriated by prayerful
meditation.

James 2:23 23. scripture was fulfilled—
Genesis 15:6, quoted by Paul, as
realized in Abraham's justification by faith; but by James, as
realized subsequently in Abraham's work of offering Isaac,
which, he says, justified him. Plainly, then, James must mean
by works the same thing as Paul means
Revelation 16:6 6. (Revelation 11:18;
Genesis 9:6; Isaiah 49:26.)
An anticipation of Revelation 18:20;
Revelation 18:24; compare Revelation 18:24- :.
