Job 16:22 22. few—literally, "years
of number," that is, few, opposed to numberless
(Genesis 34:30).
Job 25:3 3. armies—angels and stars
(Isaiah 40:26; Jeremiah 33:22;
Genesis 15:5; "countless,"
Daniel 7:10).
his light— (Daniel 7:10- :).
Psalms 101:2 2. He avows his sincere purpose,
by God's aid, to act uprightly (Genesis 17:1;
Psalms 18:30).
Psalms 119:122 122. Be surety—Stand for me
against my oppressors (Genesis 43:9;
Isaiah 38:14).
Psalms 147:14 14. maketh . . . borders—or,
territories (Genesis 23:17; Isaiah 54:12).
filleth thee,

Proverbs 23:35 35. awake—that is, from
drunkenness (Genesis 9:24). This is
the language rather of acts than of the tongue.
Proverbs 6:31 31. sevenfold—(compare :-), for many, ample (compare Genesis 4:24;
Matthew 18:21), even if all his
wealth is taken.
Ecclesiastes 2:9 9. great—opulent (Genesis 24:35;
Job 1:3; see Job 1:3- :).
remained— (Job 1:3- :).
Isaiah 1:10 10. Sodom—spiritually (Genesis 19:24;
Jeremiah 23:14; Ezekiel 16:46;
Revelation 11:8).
Jeremiah 29:11 despondency.
expected end—literally,
"end and expectation," that is, an end, and that such an
end as you wish for. Two nouns joined by "and," standing
for a noun and adjective. So in Isaiah 55:9- :, "the roll and the words," that is, the roll of
words; Genesis 3:16, "sorrow and
conception," that is, sorrow in conception. Compare Genesis 3:16- :, where, as here "end" means "a happy issue."
Jeremiah 31:20 anticipating his
return with prevenient grace and love. Compare Jeremiah 31:19- :: "When he was yet a great way off, his father
saw him and had compassion," c.
spake against—threatened
him for his idolatry.
remember—with favor and
concern, as in Genesis 8:1 Genesis 30:22.
bowels . . . troubled for
him— (Deuteronomy 32:36; Isaiah 63:15;
Hosea 11:8) —namely, with the
yearnings of compassionate love. The "bowels" include the
region of the heart, the seat of the affections.
Jeremiah 42:5 5. Lord be a true . . . witness—
(Genesis 31:50; Psalms 89:37;
Revelation 1:5; Revelation 3:14;
Revelation 19:11).
Jeremiah 52:31 met
Jeconiah and contracted a friendship with him, whence arose the favor
which subsequently he showed him. God, in his elevation, rewarded his
having surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar (compare Jeremiah 38:17;
2 Kings 24:12).
lifted up . . . head—(Compare
Genesis 40:13; Genesis 40:20;
Psalms 3:3; Psalms 27:6).
Ezekiel 19:10 fallen into her present
troubles. English Version is better. GLASSIUS
explains it well, retaining the metaphor, which CALVIN'S
explanation breaks, "in the blood of thy grapes," that is,
in her full strength, as the red wine is the strength of the grape.
Genesis 49:11 is evidently alluded
to.
many waters—the
well-watered land of Canaan (Genesis 49:11- :).
Daniel 10:15 15. face toward the ground—in
humble reverence (Genesis 19:1).
dumb—with overwhelming
awe.
Luke 13:18 leaven. Nor does it yield much satisfaction to understand the
"three measures of meal" of that threefold division of our
nature into "spirit, soul, and body," (alluded to in :-) or of the threefold partition of the world among the three
sons of Noah (Genesis 10:32), as
some do. It yields more real satisfaction to see in this brief
parable just the all-penetrating and assimilating
quality of the Gospel, by virtue of which it will yet mould all
institutions and tribes of men, and exhibit over the whole
1 Corinthians 15:55 Hades, is thy destruction?"
The Septuagint, "Where is thy victory (literally, in a
lawsuit), O death? Where is thy sting, O Hades? . . . Sting"
answers to the Hebrew "plagues," namely, a poisoned
sting causing plagues. Appropriate, as to the old
serpent (Genesis 3:14; Genesis 3:15;
Numbers 21:6). "Victory"
answers to the Hebrew "destruction." Compare Numbers 21:6- :, "destroy . . . veil . . . over all nations,"
namely, victoriously destroy it; and to "in victory"
(1 Corinthians 15:54), which he
triumphantly
Ephesians 5:2 Aaron's
head, answers to the variety of the graces by which He was enabled to
"offer Himself a sacrifice for a sweet-smelling savor."
Another type, or prophecy by figure, was "the sweet savor"
("savor of rest," Margin) which God smelled
in Noah's sacrifice (Genesis 8:21).
Again, as what Christ is, believers also are (Genesis 8:21- :), and ministers are: Paul says (Genesis 8:21- :) "we are unto God a sweet savor of Christ."
