Genesis 5:1 1. book of the generations—(See
Genesis 11:4).
Adam—used here either
as the name of the first man, or of the human race generally.
Job 30:23 23. This shows :- cannot be restricted to Job's hope of a temporal
deliverance.
death—as in :-, the realm of the dead (Hebrews 9:27;
Genesis 3:19).
Job 31:9 9-12. Job asserts his innocence
of adultery.
deceived—hath let
itself be seduced (Proverbs 7:8;
Genesis 39:7-12).
laid wait—until the
husband went out.
Job 32:9 9. Great—rather, "old"
(Job 32:6). So Hebrew,
in Genesis 25:23. "Greater,
less" for the older, the younger.
judgment—what is right.
Psalms 103:14 14. he—"who formed,"
Psalms 94:9.
knoweth our frame—literally,
"our form."
we are dust—made of and
tending to it (Genesis 2:7).
Psalms 116:9 9. walk before the Lord—act,
or live under His favor and guidance (Genesis 17:1;
Psalms 61:7).
land of the living— (Psalms 61:7- :).
Psalms 147:4 4, 5. God's power in nature ( :-, and often) is presented as a pledge of His power to
help His people.
telleth . . . stars—what
no man can do (Genesis 15:5).
Psalms 41:11 11-13. favourest—or tenderly
lovest me (Genesis 34:19), evinced
by relief from his enemies, and, farther, God recognizes his
innocence by upholding him.
Psalms 50:4 4. above—literally, "above"
(Genesis 1:7).
heavens . . . earth—For
all creatures are witnesses (Deuteronomy 4:26;
Deuteronomy 30:19; Isaiah 1:2).
Psalms 59:11 11. Slay them not—at once ( :-); but perpetuate their punishment (Genesis 4:12;
Numbers 32:13), by scattering or
making them wander, and humble them.
Psalms 78:51 51. chief of their
strength—literally, "first-fruits," or, "first-born"
(Genesis 49:3; Deuteronomy 21:17).
Ham—one of whose sons
gave name (Mizraim, Hebrew) to Egypt.
Psalms 80:18 18. We need quickening grace
(Psalms 71:20; Psalms 119:25)
to persevere in Thy right worship (Genesis 4:26;
Romans 10:11).
Psalms 9:12 12. for blood—that is, murders
(Psalms 5:6), including all the
oppressions of His people.
maketh inquisition—(compare
Genesis 9:5). He will avenge their
cause.
Proverbs 11:22 22. Jewels were often suspended
from the nose (Genesis 24:47; Isaiah 3:21).
Thus adorned, a hog disgusts less than a fair and indiscreet woman.
Proverbs 29:10 10. bloodthirsty—(Compare
Margin), murderers (Psalms 5:6;
Psalms 26:9).
hate, c.— (Proverbs 1:11
Genesis 3:4).
seek . . . soul—that
is, to preserve it.
Proverbs 8:28 28. established . . . deep—that
is, so as to sustain the waters above and repress those below the
firmament (Genesis 1:7-11;
Job 26:8).
Ezekiel 27:20 20. Dedan—in Arabia; distinct
from the Dedan in Ezekiel 27:15
(see on Ezekiel 27:2). Descended
from Abraham and Keturah (Genesis 25:3)

precious clothes—splendid
coverlets.
Ezekiel 33:25 25. eat with the blood—in
opposition to the law (Leviticus 19:26;
compare Genesis 9:4). They did so as
an idolatrous rite.
Ezekiel 34:27 27. served themselves of
them—availed themselves of their services, as if the Jews were
their slaves (Jeremiah 22:13; Jeremiah 25:14;
compare Genesis 15:13; Exodus 1:14).
Matthew 5:8 strange to
the Old Testament; and though it was an understood thing that this
was not possible in the present life ( :-; and compare Job 19:26;
Job 19:27; Isaiah 6:5),
yet spiritually it was known and felt to be the privilege of the
saints even here (Genesis 5:24;
Genesis 6:9; Genesis 17:1;
Genesis 48:15; Psalms 27:4;
Psalms 36:9; Psalms 63:2;
Isaiah 38:3; Isaiah 38:11,
c.). But oh, with what grand simplicity, brevity, and power is this
great fundamental truth here expressed! And in what striking
