שָׁקַל fut. יִשְׁקֹל, once אֶשְׁקֲלָה (as if from יִשְׁקַל) Jeremiah 32:9 to poise, to weigh (Arab. شقل, more often ثقل, Syr. ܫܘܰܠ and ܬܩܠ id. The primary idea is that of suspending a balance, compare Ethiopic ሰቀለ፡ to suspend, as on a cross. Compare סָלָא, סָלָה, and Lat. pendo, pendeo), Exodus 22:16; 2 Samuel 14:26; Isaiah 40:12. Followed by לְ to weigh out to any one (metals, money), Genesis 23:16; Jeremiah 32:9; Ezra 8:25 followed by עַל יְדֵי Ezra 8:26; Esther 3:9 followed by עַל (to weigh over or into the royal treasuries) Esther 4:7; 2 Samuel 18:12, “although I might weigh a thousand shekels in my hands,” i.e. if they were weighed, counted to me.
