2. c. acc. pers., ἀποτείσασθαί τινα avenge oneself on another, punish him, Od. 5.24, X. Cyr. 5.4.35, etc.

3. c. acc. rei, take vengeance for a thing, punish it, εἴ κέ ποτέ σφι βίας ἀποτείσεται Od. 3.216, cf. 16.255; τὰ παράνομα.. θεὸς ἀ. Ar. Th. 684: c. gen. rei, ἀ. τῶν.. ἱρῶν κατακαυθέντων Hdt. 6.101, v. supr. 1.2: abs., take vengeance, Thgn. l.c., Song of Solomon 4:16. [ ἀποτίνω ] has by position before νϝ in , in Att. For ἀποτίνυμαι, which has by nature, ἀποτείνυμαι should perh. be read in early texts; cf. foreg.]

The verb is very common—P Petr I. 16 (2).13 (iii/B.C.) ἐὰν δὲ μὴ διαγράψω [καὶ ] μὴ παράσχωμαι τὸ λοιπὸν ἐμφανὲς ἀποτείσω ἡμιόλιον, P Par 13.14 (B.C. 157) ἀποτίνειν αὐτὸν τὴν φερνὴν παραχρῆμα σὺν τῇ ἡμιολίᾳ, P Oxy I. 101.43 (lease of land, A.D. 142) ὃ δ᾽αν προσοφειλέσῃ ὁ μεμισθωμένος ἀποτεισάτω μεθ᾽ ἡμιολίας, ib. IV. 730.26 (A.D. 130) al. In an interesting contract of apprenticeship, P Oxy II. 275.27 (A.D. 66) (= Selections, p. 57) the father comes under a ";forfeit"; for each day of his son’s absence from work— ̣[πο ]τεισάτω ἑκάσ [τ ]ης ἡμέρας ἀργυρίου [δρ ́]αχμὴν μίαν. The verb is thus stronger than ἀποδίδωμι, and carries with it the idea of repayment by way of punishment or fine (cf. Gradenwitz Einf. i. p. 85 n.4), a fact which lends emphasis to its use in Philemon 1:19. For the contrast between the two verbs, see P Gen I. 21.14 (ii/B.C.), as restored by Wilcken Archiv iii. p. 388, ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀποδῶι καθὰ γέγραπται, ἀποτε [ι ]σάτω [παραχ ]ρῆμα ἡμι [ ]λιον, cf. BGU I. 190.3 ff., 2nd fragment (Domitian), ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἰσαποδῶι, ἀποτισάτωι παραχρῆμα μεθ᾽ ἡμιολία [ς ], and a similar use of προσαποτίσω in P Leid C.11.

From the inscriptions cf. Kaibel 509.2 where a certain physician of Nicaea records—πολ [λ ]ὴν θάλασσα [ν ] καὶ γαῖαν [π ]ερι [νο ]στήσας τὸ π [επρω ]μένον ὧδ᾽ [ἀπέ ]τεισα, i.e. ";I died here,"; Syll 737.97 (ii/A.D.) of an ἰόβακχος ";fined,"; etc. The word occurs in P Saïd Khan 1a. 26 (B.C. 88) ἐὰν [δὲ κ ]αὶ ὁ Γαθάκης ὀλιγωρήσῃ τὴν [ἄμπε ]λον καὶ μὴ ποιήσῃ αὐτη ̣̣[ν ] ε ̣͗παφον (?), ἀποτειννυέτω τὸ α [ὐτὸ ἐπί ]τειμον : Radermacher Gr. p. 81 n.2 mentions ζέννυμι for ζέω, and ἀποτίνυμι in Passio Scillitanorum 6.
