III. שׁמר (√ of following; meaning dubious; Late Hebrew שָׁמִיר diamond, so Aramaic שָׁמִירָא (also flint), ; Arabic = mimosa gummifera, Lane1425b).

שֶׁמֶר only pl. שְׁמָרִים m. dregs (of wine), so called because, when wine is kept on the lees, its strength and colour are preserved. קָפָא עַל שְׁמָרָיו, שָׁקַט Jeremiah 48:11; Zephaniah 1:12, to be settled on one’s lees, to lead a quiet and tranquil life; a metaphor taken from wine, Isaiah 25:6, שְׁמָרִים מְזֻקָּקִים “lees racked off,” i.e. old and most excellent wine afterwards purified from the lees.
