מִשְׁמָר m. (from the root שָׁמָר)
(1) custody, guard.
(a) i.q. prison, Genesis 40:3, seqq.; 42:17.
(b) station of a watch, Nehemiah 7:3; Jeremiah 51:12 hence used of the watchmen themselves, Nehemiah 4:3, 16 Job 7:12.
(c) that which is guarded. Proverbs 4:23, “keep thy heart מִכָּל־מִשְׁמָר above all the things which are to be guarded.”
(2) observance, that which is observed, rite, Nehemiah 13:14. Concr. one who is observed, to whom reverence is due, used of a ruler, Ezekiel 38:7.
