(1) to be or become satisfied or satiated (Arab. شَبِعَ id. I place the primary idea in abundance of drink; compare סָבָא; although in the common use of the language this verb is more employed as to food than as to drink) Frequently used of one satisfied with food, Deuteronomy 31:20; Ruth 2:14; Isaiah 44:16, etc.; more rarely of one who is so with drink, i.q. רָוָה Amos 4:8 hence used of a well-watered land, Proverbs 30:16; Psalms 104:16. It is ascribed to the soul (see ופְנְ No. 2 ), Ecclesiastes 6:3 and metaph. to the eye which is satisfied with seeing, Ecclesiastes 1:8 compare Isaiah 53:11; Psalms 17:15. Constr. absol. Hosea 4:10; Psalms 37:19 followed by an acc. of the thing, as שָׂבַע לֶחֶם to be satisfied with bread, Exodus 16:12; Job 27:14; Ecclesiastes 5:9 followed by מִן Proverbs 14:14, 18:20 Job 31:31 followed by בְּ Psalms 65:5, 88:4 followed by לְ before an inf., Ecclesiastes 1:8. Metaph. it is said, to be satisfied with money, Ecclesiastes 5:9 with shame, Lamentations 3:30; Habakkuk 2:16 with contempt, Psalms 123:4 with calamity, Psalms 88:4.
