I. רבד (√ of following; compare Arabic confine, tie.)
רַב in pause רָב, f. רַבָּה, pl. רַבִּים adj. (from the root רָבַב).
(1) multus, whether of one continuous thing (answering to the French beaucoup de, Engl. much), as זָהָב רַב much gold, 1 Kings 10:2; Psalms 19:11 or of collectives which contain many parts (many individual things), (answering to the Lat. and French numerosus, nombreux, Engl. many), as עַם רַב much, or many people, i.e. numerous, Joshua 17:14 אָדָם רַב many men, Job 36:28 (here οἱ πολλοί); עֲבֻדָּה רַבָּה a numerous train of servants, Genesis 26:14 מִקְנֶה רַב much cattle, Numbers 32:1. Hence, with pl., יָמִים רַבִּים many days, long time, Genesis 21:34 עַמִּים רַבִּים many peoples, Psalms 89:51. Followed by a genit. רַב תְּבוּנָה a man of much (great) understanding, Proverbs 14:29 רַבַּת בָּנִים she who has many children, 1 Samuel 2:5 with י parag. רַבָּתִי עָם (a city) abounding with people, Lamentations 1:1. Often put as the neuter for much, Exodus 19:21, נָפַל מִמֶּנּוּ רַב, which is rendered in Latin, cadunt ex iis multi; but it is properly, es fällt von ihnen viel (Mannfchaft), 1 Samuel 14:6; Genesis 33:9. Hence adv. and even with a pl. subst. Psalms 18:15, בְּרָקִים רַב “lightnings much” (der Bliße viel, Bliße in Menge); Ecclesiastes 6:3, וְרַב שֶׁיִּהְיוּ יְמֵי שָׁנָיו “although many be the days of his years.” Often i.q. enough, (it is) enough, it is sufficient, Genesis 45:28 especially in the phrase (compare מְעַט), רַב עַתָּה ohe! jam satis! “enough, now!” i.e. desist! 2 Samuel 24:16; 1 Kings 19:4 more fully רַב לָךְ Deuteronomy 3:26 רַב לָכֶם Ezekiel 45:9; Numbers 16:3, desist, leave off. Followed by an inf. Deuteronomy 1:6, רַב לָכֶם שֶׁבֶת “ye have dwelt long enough;” Deuteronomy 2:3 followed by מִן Ezekiel 44:6, רַב לָכֶם מִכָּל־תּוֹעֲבוֹתֵיכֶם “desist from all your abominations;” 1 Kings 12:28; Exodus 9:28.-Also f. רַבָּה is often used as a neuter, Psalms 123:4 and adverbially for much, enough, Psalms 62:3 and more often constr. state רַבַּת Psalms 65:10, 120:6 123:4.
(2) great, large, vast (compare πολύς, in Passow, No. 1, b), used of wide space, Genesis 7:11; Esther 1:20 of a long way (πολλὴ ὁδός), 1 Kings 19:7 of a great battle and slaughter, 2 Chronicles 13:17; Numbers 11:33 of grievous sin, Psalms 19:14 of the manifold loving-kindness of God, Psalms 31:20 of continued attention (compare πολλὴ σιγή), Isaiah 21:7. Specially
(a) i.q. powerful, Psalms 48:3; Isaiah 63:1. Pl. רַבִּים the mighty, Job 35:9; Isaiah 53:12.
(b) elder, Genesis 25:23. Pl. רַבִּים the old, Job 32:9.
(c) subst. a great man, leader, i.q. שַׂר, especially in the later Hebrew, e.g. רַב טַבָּחִים chief of the body guard, 2 Kings 25:8 רַב סָרִיסִים chief of the eunuchs, Daniel 1:3; Esther 1:8.
(d) a master, one who is skilled in any art, skilful, Proverbs 26:10. Compare Talmud. רַב doctor, excellent teacher.-Neutr. and subst. magnitude, Psalms 145:7; Isaiah 63:7.
(3) Job 16:13, רַבָּיו all the ancient versions render, his darts, his arrows (God’s), from רָבַב No. 2. Others, his archers. The sense, however, may be retained, his many, i.e. bands of soldiers; which is however harsh.
רַב Ch.
(1) great, Daniel 2:10, 31, 35, 45. מַלֵּל רַבְרְבָן to speak great things, i.e. to speak proudly, impiously, Daniel 7:8, 20. Compare גָּדוֹל No. 2, and פָּלָא Niphal.
(2) subst. chief, leader, captain, Daniel 2:48, 5:11. Pl. רַבְרְבִין (from the sing. רַבְרַב) Dan. 3:33 2:48 7:3,, 17.
