אָצִיל m.
(1) a side, i.q. אֵצֶל; Isaiah 41:9, אֲצִילֵי הָאָרֶץ “sides (i.e. limits, extremities) of the earth” (as elsewhere יַרְכְּתֵי הָאָרֶץ, כַּנְפוֹת הָאָרֶץ. In the other member קְצוֹת הָאָרֶץ.
(2) adj. i.q. Arab. أَصِيلُ prop. deep-rooted, striking deep roots into the earth; hence metaph. sprung from an ancient and noble stock, noble, Exodus 24:11. (Compare as to both words, the Hebrew and the Arabic, the root אָצַל No. 1.) The Germans [and other nations] in the same sense take the image from the stock and trunk, the Hebrews from the root.
