(1) a quarter of the heaven (prop. wind, so called from its blowing, compare in Targg. אַרְבַּע רוּחִין four winds, for Hebr. הָאָרֶץ אַרְבַּעַת כַּנְפוֹת Ezekiel 7:2, compare 37:9 42:20. פְּאַת־יָם the west quarter, Joshua 18:14 פְּאַת צָפוֹן the north quarter, Exodus 26:18, 20 Exodus 26:20. Hence
(2) side, region, Jeremiah 48:45, פְּאַת מוֹאָב “region of Moab.” Dual const, state פַּאֲתֵי מוֹאָב “both sides of Moab,” Numbers 24:17, compare יַרְכָּתַיִם, יָדַיִם.
(3) a corner, as of a field, Leviticus 19:9 of a bed, Amos 3:12. פְּאַת הַזָּקָן the corner or extremity of the beard, the hairs upon the cheeks and before the ears, Backenbart, whiskers, as the Jewish doctors rightly explain, Levit. 19:27 21:5. It was prohibited to shave them; and the Arabian nations shaving them (like the Egyptians), are called in reproach, קְצוּצֵי פֵאָה (men) with the whiskers cut off, Jerem. 9:25 25:23 49:32.
