סָתַר to hide, once in Kal, Proverbs 22:3 כתיב, where the קרי has Niph., comp. Proverbs 27:12.

Niphal

(1) to be hidden, to lie hid. Job 3:23, “to a man אֲשֶׁר דַּרְכּוֹ נִסְתָּרָה to whom his way is hidden,” who does not know how to escape from calamities. Followed by מִן, καλύπτεσθαι ἀπό τινος (compare מִן No. 3, a), to lie hid from any one, Psalms 38:10; Isaiah 40:27. Genesis 31:49, “when we shall be hidden from one another,” when we shall be far from one another; followed by מֵעֵינָֽי Hosea 13:14, “repentance is hid from my eyes,” i.e. I am as it were ignorant of it; followed by מִפְּנֵי (Lat. occultari a conspectu alic. Plaut.), Deuteronomy 7:20 מִלִּפְנֵי Jeremiah 16:17 מִנֶּגֶד Amos 9:3. Part. נִסְתָּרוֹת hidden things, secrets, Deuteronomy 29:28 specially hidden sins, committed ignorantly, Psalms 19:13.

(2) to hide oneself, 1 Samuel 20:5, 19 1 Samuel 20:19 followed by מִן Psalms 55:13, and מִפְּנֵי Genesis 4:14.

Piel, to hide, Isaiah 16:3.

Pual, to be hidden, Proverbs 27:5.

Hiphil הִסְתִּיר to hide. Job 3:10, וַיַּסְתֵּר עָמָל מֵעֵינָיֽ “and (that) he did (not) hide calamity from my eyes,” did not turn it away from me, avert it.

(1) to cover over, especially the face, Exodus 3:6 followed by מִן from any one, Isaiah 53:3, כְּמַסְתֵּר פָּנִים מִמֶּנּוּ for מ׳ פ׳ מ׳ כַּאֲשֶׁר “as one from whom they hide the face,” i.e. from whom they turn their eyes as from something disgusting and abominable (מַסְתֵּר is in this place the part. formed in the Chaldee manner, for מַסְתִּיר, which is found in four copies; it is here impers. as if כְּמוֹ אֲשֶׁר מִמֶּנּוּ יַסְתִּירוּ פָנִים). Specially Jehovah is said to hide, or veil over his face

(a) when he does not regard human affairs, Psalms 10:11 followed by מִן Psalms 51:11, הַסְתֵּר פָּנֶיךָ מֵחֲטָאָי “hide thy face from my sins;” do not regard them, forgive them.

(b) when it denotes displeasure (opp. to הֵאִיר פָּנִיס) Psalms 30:8, 104:29 followed by מִן of pers. to hide the face (and turn away) from any one, Psalms 22:25, 27:9 88:15 102:3 119:19 Isaiah 54:8, 64:6, and so frequently; without פָּנִים Isaiah 57:17, אַכֵּהוּ הַסְתֵּר וְאֶקְצֹף “I smote them (the people) hiding my face, and being angry.”

(2) to conceal something from any one, followed by מִן of pers. 1 Samuel 20:2 followed by מִפְּנֵי 2 Kings 11:2.

(3) to guard, to defend, Psalms 31:21, 27:5 followed by מִן from any one, Psalms 64:3.

Hithpael הִסְתַּתֵּר to hide oneself, 1 Samuel 23:19, 26:1 Isaiah 29:14, 45:15.
