אַחַר prop. what is behind, hinder part, extremity. Hence
(1) adv.
(a) of place, behind, in the background; Genesis 22:13, וְהִנֵּה אַיִל אַחַר נֶאֱחָז בַּסְּבָךְ בְּקַרְנָיו “and behold a ram behind,” i.e. in the background (im Hintergrunde) “caught by its horns in a thicket.” Not that Abraham beheld the ram behind his back, as it is commonly thought, with the Vulgate, but at a distance in the part which lay before his eyes, im Hintergrunde der Scene, and there is no occasion to read with the Sam., LXX., Syr. and 42. MSS. אֶחָר.
(b) adv. of time, afterwards, then, Genesis 10:18, 18:5 24:55 30:21, etc.
(2) prep.
(a) of place, behind, Song of Solomon 2:9; Exodus 3:1, “behind the desert,” i.e. to the west of the desert [“see in אָחוֹר No.2 ”]; also after. הָלַךְ אַחַר פּ to follow any one, Genesis 37:17; Job 31:7 מֵאַחַר pregn. prop. from behind (hinter [etwas] weg). Psalms 78:71, מֵאַחַר עָלוֹת הֱבִיאוֹ “from after the milch cattle he brought him,” i.e. he brought him who had followed the cattle.
(b) of time, after, Genesis 9:28. אַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה “after these things,” i.e. afterwards, a formula of transition; Genesis 15:1, 22:1. Followed by an Infin. after that, Numbers 6:19, אַחַר כֵּן prop. after so, i.e. after that it had so happened, i.e. afterwards, Leviticus 14:36; Deuteronomy 21:13.
(3) Conj. אַחַר אֲשֶׁר after that, Ezekiel 40:1 and without אֲשֶׁר Leviticus 14:43; Job 42:7.
Note. Instead of אַחַר there occurs far more frequently Pl. אַחֲרֵי, for which see just below, and it is constantly used when suff. are joined with this word.
Pl. אֲחָרִים only in const. state אַחֲרֵי; with suff. אַחֲרֵיכֶם אַחֲרַי, אַחֲרֵיהֶם, etc.
(1) subst. the hinder parts, 2 Samuel 2:23, בְּאַחֲרֵי הַחֲנִית “the hinder end of the spear.”
(2) Prep.
(a) of place, behind, Judges 18:12 (here i.q. to the west); more frequently after, hinter, hinter (iem.) her, Leviticus 26:33; 1 Samuel 14:37; 2 Kings 19:21 אַחֲרֵיהֶם (אֲשֶׁר) “those who follow them,” i.e. their flatterers, and parasites, Psalms 49:14. Hence it is joined to verbs of going, = to follow; הָיָה אַחֲרֵי פ׳ is to follow any one’s side, Exodus 23:2; 2 Samuel 2:10 comp. 1 Kings 1:7; Proverbs 28:23, מוֹכִיחַ אָדָם אַחֲרַי חֵן יִמְצָא “he who following me (i.e. my precepts) rebukes a man, shall find favour.”
(b) of time, after, Genesis 16:13, 17:8 followed by an inf. after that, Genesis 5:4.
(3) For conj. after that, commonly אַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר, Deu. 24:4 Joshua 9:16, 23:1 more rarely אֲשֶׁר is omitted, Leviticus 25:48 once אַחֲרֵי כַּאֲשֶׁר Joshua 2:7.
(4) אַחֲרי־כֵן prop. after that things had so happened, i.e. afterwards, Genesis 15:14, 23:19 25:26, etc. Comp. Syr. ܒܳܬܰܪܟܶܢ and ܒܳܬܰܪ ܗܳܟܰܢ. With the addition of אֲשֶׁר it becomes a conj. i.q. אַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר, like the Lat. posteaquam for postquam, Genesis 6:4; 2 Samuel 24:10. In the later [?] Hebrew there also occurs אַהֲרֵי זֹאת “after this,” Job 42:16; Ezra 9:10 compare Chald. אַחֲרֵי רְנָה Daniel 2:29, 45.
Comp. with other prep.
(1) מֵאַחֲרֵי, once מִן־אַחֲרֵי 1 Chronicles 17:7, prop. from after, from (being) after (any thing), hinter (etwas) weg. It is used especially when one leaves what he has before followed, Numbers 14:43; Deuteronomy 7:4; 2 Samuel 20:2, also from behind, after (compare מִן No. 3); Joshua 8:2; Exodus 14:19; Jeremiah 9:21 used of time, Ecclesiastes 10:14. In Nehemiah 4:7, for this is מֵאַחֲרֵי לְ. Hence, מֵאַחֲרֵי בֵז afterwards, 2 Samuel 3:28, 15:1.
(2) אֶל אַחֲרֵי after, with verbs of motion, 2 Kings 9:18, סֹב אֶל אַחֲרַי “return after me.” 2 Samuel 5:23.
(3) עַל אַחֲרֵי Ezekiel 41:15, i.q. אַחֲרֵי. Comp. עַל.
אַחַר pl. const. אַחֲרֵי also Ch. (but by a Hebraism), Daniel 2:29, 45 7:24. In the more pure Chaldee is used the prep. בָּתַר.
