The signification of burning is found in the stock חר, comp. חָרָה, חָרַךְ, חָרַל, حرق, Lat. areo, uro, and Germ. har, hhr, fire; Heerd, harften, to roast. The primary idea is that of the shrivelled roughness of things that are dried or scorched; compare חָרַס, חָרַב).
