Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָלַם fut. יַחֲלֹם

(1) Arabic حلَمَ Conj. I. V. to be fat, fleshy, spoken of an infant, flocks, see the Arabic lexicographers in Scheid, Cant. Hiskiæ, page 140 (cogn. חָלַב, حلس). Hence once Job 39:4, to become strong or robust (Syr. Pe. and Ethpe. to become sound or strong).

(2) to dream (because, it is said, fatness of body inclines to sleep and dreams; at all events the significations of fatness and dreaming are often found in the other cognate languages expressed by the same letters. Arab. حلم Eth. ሐለመ፡ Syr. ܚܠܰܡ), Genesis 37:5, seq.; 42:9 Isaiah 29:8. חֹלֵם חֲלוֹם a dreamer of dreams, i.q. נָבִיא, inasmuch as dreams were ascribed to divine inspiration [or rather because revelations were often made to God’s true prophets in dreams], Deuteronomy 13:2, Deuteronomy 13:4 compare Joel 3:1; Numbers 12:6.

Hiphil

(1) to cause to recover, Isaiah 38:16.

(2) to cause to dream, Jeremiah 29:8.

Derivatives, חֲלוֹם, חַלָּמוּת, אַחְלְמָה [also חֵלֶם and patron. נֶחֱלָמִי].
