II. חָלָל adjective profaned; — חָלָל רָשָׁע (read construct חֲלַל SS) profaned, dishonoured wicked one Ezekiel 21:30 (so AV Thes MV SS Co Or; but RV H" deadly wounded, Ew Sm fallen, slain); plural construct חַלְלֵי רְשָׁעִים Ezekiel 21:34; feminine singular חֲלָלָה of woman sexually dishonoured Leviticus 21:7,14 (H; "" זָנָה).
חָלָל masc. adj.
(1) pierced through, hence mortallywounded, Job 24:12; Psalms 69:27; Jeremiah 51:52, and often slain, in battle, Deuteronomy 21:1, Deuteronomy 21:2, Deuteronomy 21:3, Deuteronomy 21:6. חֲלַל חֶרֶב slain with the sword, Numbers 19:16 and figuratively, for the sake of the antithesis, חַלְלֵי רָעָב those slain by hunger, Lamentations 4:9 compare Isaiah 22:2.
(2) profane (see the verb Piel No. 3). Ezekiel 21:30 f. חֲלָלָה (standing in connection with זוֹנָה) profaned, i.e. a harlot, Leviticus 21:7, 14 Leviticus 21:14. As to the active signification of one who pierces through, i.e. a soldier, which some have proposed, see Comment. on Isaiah 22:2.
