Vocabulary of the Greek NT

πάθος, which in the NT has always a bad connotation ";passion,"; ";lust"; (see Trench, Syn. § lxxxvii), may be illustrated from Preisigke 3451.3 (i/B.C.) ἀπὸ πάθους ἰδίου, Syll 373 (=.3 810).20 (A.D. 55) σπουδαίῳ πάθει τοὺς ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ἐπ᾽ ἐμοῦ ποιησαμένων λόγους, and ib. 890 (= .3 1239).20 (ii/A.D.), where ὅσα κακὰ κ [αὶ πά ]θη ἀνθρώποι [ς ] γ ()νεται are invoked as a curse on the man who disturbs a tomb. BGU II. 588.4 (i/A.D.) shows the noun, unfortunately in a broken context : in ib. I. 316.28 (A.D. 359) κρυπτὸν πάθος, the reference is to bodily sickness. See also Epict. iii. 2. 3. MGr πάθος, ";suffering,"; ";passion";; pl. πάθη, πάθια.
