For the use of this verb in Revelation 18:19, Boll (Offenbarung, p. 133) cites from Hellenistic astrology Catal. VII. 170, 16 and 21, ναοὶ (μεγάλοι) ἐρημωθήσονται, 171, 14 ναὸς μέγας ἐρημωθήσεται. See also OGIS 519.32 (c. A.D. 245) συνέβη. . . τὰ χωρία ἐρημοῦσθαι. The noun (as in Matthew 24:15) survives in the MGr ἐρήμωσι, ";isolation.";
