1. step in, μή τις.. ἐμβήῃ let none step in (so as to interfere), 16.94: c. dat., ποταμῷ οὐκ ἔστιν δὶς τῷ αὐτῷ ἐμβῆναι Heraclit. 91; εἰς πηλόν Id. 5; ἐμβέβακεν ἴχνεσιν πατρός Pi. P. 10.12.
2. go on, go quickly, ἔμβητον, says Antilochus to his horses, Il. 23.403; ἔμβα advance! E. El. 113 (lyr.).
3. embark on a ship, ἐρέται δ' ἐν ἑκάστη πεντήκοντα ἐμβέβασαν Il. 2.720; τότε δ' ἔμβη νηΐ Πύλονδε Od. 4.656, cf. Il. 1.311; ἐς ἕτερον πλοῖον ἐ. (v.l. for ἐσβ-) Hdt. 2.29, cf. III intr., step, march or dance, ὀρθῶς Pl. Alc. 1.108c; πρὸς ῥυθμόν Luc. Salt. 10.

P Petr III. 26.5 ἐ ]ὰν ἐμβῆι βοῦς. . . εἰς ἀλλότριον κλῆρον, ";if an ox trespass on another man’s allotment"; (Edd.), P Oxy II. 259.31 (A.D. 23) εἰ δὲ [μ ]ὴ ἐμβέβηκ (εν)—on a ship, BGU II. 665ii. 12 (i/A.D.) διὸ παρακαλῶ σε, πάτερ, τὸ μὲμ πρῶτον ἐμβῆναι σὺν αὐτῇ τὰ περὶ ἔσχατα τοῦ Μ [ε ]χείρ, and P Ryl I. 28.19 (iv/A.D.) ἐν πολλοῖς [ἐ ]μβήσεται, ";will engage upon many things"; (Ed.). See also Syll 895.1 ἐτελεύτησα ἐμβὰς (ε)ἰς ἔτη πέντε. It may be noted that in ExpT xxvi. p. 248 ff. Rendel Harris quotes Syriac evidence to show that ἐμβάντα καθῆσθαι in Mark 4:1 is an ";Aramaism"; for ";to go aboard.";
