רֵאשִׁית f. once רֵשִׁית Deuteronomy 11:12 (denom. from רֹאשׁ, Ch. רֵאשׁ head, chief, with the added syllable ־ִית, see Gr. § 76, No. 4).

(a) with regard to time, first fruits, Genesis 49:3, רֵאשִׁית אוֹנִי “first fruits of my strength,” i.e. first born. רֵאשִׁית דַּרְכּוֹ first fruits of things created by him, Proverbs 8:22 [this is rather to be compared with ἡ ἀρχὴ τῆς κτίσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ, Revelation 3:14, i.e. Christ, head of creation, not spoken of as a creature], compare Job 40:19; Deuteronomy 33:21, וַיַּרְא רֵאשִׁית לוֹ “he chose the first part for himself,” as if the first fruits of the holy land. Very often used of the first fruits offered in the temple, Leviticus 2:12, 23:10 Deuteronomy 18:4, 26:10.
(b) with regard to dignity, the first, chief, Amos 6:1,.
