Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עַיִר m. with suff. עִירֹה Genesis 49:11, plur. עֲיָרִים, a young ass, the foal of an ass, Zechariah 9:9. Job 11:12, עַיִר פֶּרֶא “a wild ass’s colt.” Sometimes used also of a full grown ass, used for riding on (Judges 10:4, 12:14 ), for carrying loads (Isaiah 30:6), for plowing (Isaiah 30:24). Compare Genesis 32:16. (Arabic عَيْرُ signifies any ass, whether wild or domestic. It appears properly to signify a wild ass, and a young ass, so called from its swift, ardent running; see the root עִיר No. 1, like פֶּרֶא a wild ass, from פְּרָא to run.)
