אחד (√ of following; see Biblical Hebrew אֶחָד.

1 one side Daniel 7:5; noun omitted Daniel 6:3; חֲדָה Daniel 2:9 = one and invariable (inevitable); כַּחֲדָה Daniel 2:35 as one, altogether (so S-C K 3 ᵑ7, and late Biblical Hebrew כְּאֶחָד Ezra 2:64 +); = ordinal, שְׁנַת חֲדָה first year Ezra 7:1; Ezra 5:13; Ezra 6:3; ׳ח = a certain one (τινὰ) Daniel 7:16 (with מִן partitive).

אֶחָד const: אַחַר [“and so before מִן Leviticus 13:2 before עָשָׂר Genesis 32:23 and elsewhere, Genesis 48:22; 2 Samuel 17:22; Zechariah 11:7 ”]; f. אַחַת (for אַחֶדֶת); in pause אֶחָת; a numeral having the power of an adj. one. Arab. أَحَدُ (not أَحِدُ, as in Winer); f. إِحْدَى, Eth. አሐዱ፡ ahadu (not አሐድ፡ ahad, as in Winer also), Ch. and Syr. חַד, ܂ܚܰܕ. The same radical letters are found in the Pehlevi advek, one, and without the third radical Daleth, Sansc. eka, and Pehlevi jek.
One has often the force of
(1) i.q. the same, Genesis 40:5; Job 31:15.
(2) first, but only so used in counting the days of the months, Ezra 10:16, 17, בְּיוֹם אֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ “on the first day of the month.” בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ “on the first day of the month,” Genesis 8:5, 13 comp. μία τῶν σαββάτων, Acts 20:7. In counting years, the expression is שְׁנַת אַחַת, just as in Germ. das Iahr Gins, Zweh, etc., for das erfte Iahr, etc., Daniel 9:1, Ezra 1:1. In other places, as Genesis 1:5, 2:11, אֶחָר does not lose the common idea of a cardinal, and the numbers follow one another as in Lat. unus, alter, tertius (Suet. Octav. 101).
(3) some one, אַחַד הָעָם “some one of the people;” אֵין אֶחָר, לֹא “no one.” Hence very often
(4) it acts the part of an indefinite article, especially in the later Hebrew, 1 Kings 20:13, נָבִיא אֶחָד “a certain prophet,” προφήτης τις; Daniel 8:3, אַיִל אֶחָד “a ram,” ein Widder; 1 Kings 19:4. So also when אֶחָר precedes, e.g. אֶחָד קָדוֹש “a certain holy one,” i.e. angel, τὶς ἄγγελος, Daniel 8:13. Sometimes also in the older books, Exodus 29:3; 1 Samuel 1:1 and followed by a genitive אַחַר הַבֹּרוֹת “one of the cisterns,” i.e. some cistern, Genesis 37:20 comp. Job 2:10.
(5) one only of its kind, Job 23:13; Ezekiel 7:5; Song of Solomon 6:9 (Arab. وَاحِدُ only one, incomparable; وَحِيدُ id. A. Schultens on Job loc. cit. and 9:5 ).
(6) When repeated אֶחָד-אֶחָד it is one … another, Exodus 17:12, 18:3. It even occurs three times repeated, 1 Samuel 10:3, 13:17, 18 1 Samuel 13:18. Also distributively of individuals, Numbers 13:2, אִישׁ אֶחָד אִישׁ אֶחָד “ye shall send one man to a tribe;” Numbers 34:18.
(7) כְּאֶחָד as one man, i.e. together. Ezra 2:64, כָּל־הַקָּהָל כְּאֶחָד “the whole congregation together;” Ezra 3:9, 6:20 Ecclesiastes 11:6, שְׁנֵיהֶם כְּאֶחָד “both alike,” alle behde. Also i.q. “together, unitedly,” Isaiah 65:25 in the same sense is said כְּאִישׁ אָחָד Judges 20:8; 1 Samuel 11:7 Ch. כַּחֲדָא.
(8) f. אַחַת ellipt. for פַּעַם אַחַה one time, once, 2 Kings 6:10; Psalms 62:12.
(9) בְּאַחַת
(a) i.q. אַחַת No. 8, Numbers 10:4.
(b) suddenly (mit einem Male), Proverbs 28:18.
(c) i.q. כְּאֶחָד altogether, Jeremiah 10:8.
(10) לְאַחַד אֶחָד one after another, one by one, Isaiah 27:12, and Ecclesiastes 7:27, אַחַת לְאַחַת “one after another.”
Note. In the passage which has been unnecessarily discussed, Isaiah 66:17, we should retain the common signification. It should thus be rendered, “who sanctify and purify themselves … אַחַר אַחַד after one,” i.e. following one; the hierophant who presides over the rest in sacred rites. Comp. my Comm. on the passage.
Pl. אֲחָדִים.
(1) the same, Genesis 11:1 comp. Lat. uni, as unis moribus vivere (Cic. pro Flacco 26; Terent. Eun. ii. 3, 75).
(2) joined in one, united; Ezekiel 37:17, וְהָיוּ לִאֲחָדִים “and they shall be (the two sticks) joined in one.”
(3) some, a few, Germ. einige, einzelne, Genesis 27:44, 29:20. Deriv. the verb אָחַד, also pr.n. אֵחוּד.
