אָדָם m.
(1) man (perhaps so called from the idea of redness, compare דָּם [“The Arabs distinguish two races of men; one red, ruddy, which we call white, the other black.” Gesen. add. But both these races are sprung from Adam]). It has neither const, state, nor plural form; but it is very often used collect. to denote men, the human race, Genesis 1:26, 27 6:1 Psalms 68:19, 76:11 Job 20:29 כָּל־אָדָם “all men,” Job 21:33. Sometimes it is put as a genitive after adjectives, as אֶבְיוֹנֵי אָדָם “the needy of men,” i.e. needy men, Isaiah 29:19 comp. Hosea 13:2 and with בְּ between, as בֹּגְדִים בְּאָדָם Proverbs 23:28.-Specially used
(a) for other men, the rest of mankind, as opposed to those in question; Jeremiah 32:20, בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וּבָאָדָם “in Israel and in other men,” Judges 16:7, 18:28 Psalms 73:5; Isaiah 43:4.
(b) of common men, as opposed to those of better condition. So כְּאָדָם nach der (gemeinen) Menfchen Weife, Job 31:33; Hosea 6:7; Psalms 82:7. Opposed to אִישׁ viri (more noble), Isaiah 2:9, 5:15 שָׂרִים Psalms 82:7 comp. Isaiah 29:21, and in pl. בְּנֵי אִישׁ Psalms 49:3; Proverbs 8:4.
(c) used of slaves, like נֶפֶשׁ Numbers 16:32.
(d) of soldiers, Kriegsmannfchaft, Isaiah 22:6 comp. אִישׁ No. 1, letter (h).
(2) a man, vir, i.q. אִישׁ Ecclesiastes 7:28, “a man (i.e. one emphatically, worthy of the name) I have found one of a thousand, but a woman in all their number I have not found.”
(3) any one, Leviticus 1:2 with a negative particle, no one, Job 32:21 comp. אִישׁ No. 4.
(4) [Adam], pr.n.
(a) of the first man made, Genesis 2:7, seq. 3, 4. In these passages at least אָדָם assumes somewhat the nature of a proper name, as denoting the man as the only one of his kind; as הַבַּעַל Baal, lord; κατʼ ἐξ., הַשָּׂטָן Satan (Lehrg. p. 653, 654). Hence LXX. Ἀδάμ, Vulg. Adam.
(b) a town on the Jordan, Joshua 3:16.
(5) בֶּן אָדָם with the art. “son of man;” used poet. for man, Numbers 23:19; Psalms 8:5, 80:18 Job 16:21, 25:6 35:8 and very often in Ezekiel where the prophet is addressed by God, בֶּן אָדָם “son of man,” i.e. mortal, Ezekiel 2:1, Ezekiel 2:3, 3:1, Ezekiel 3:3, Ezekiel 3:4, 10 Ezekiel 3:10, 4:16 8:5, Ezekiel 8:6, Ezekiel 8:8. More frequent also is the pl. בְּנֵי אָדָם men, Deuteronomy 32:8; Psalms 11:4, etc.; with the art. בְּנֵי הָאָדָם 1 Samuel 26:19; 1 Kings 8:39; Psalms 145:12; Ecclesiastes 1:13 comp. Syr. ܒܰܪܢܳܫܳܙ “son of men,” for man. [See בֵּן.]
