Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

תָּנָה to give presents, to distribute gifts, especially to hire persons. (Kindred are תָּנַן which see, נָתָן, יָתַן ). Hosea 8:10, גָּם כִּי־יִתְנוּ בַגּוֹיִם “although they distribute gifts (or hire) among the peoples,” where others read יִתְּנוּ from the root נָתַן. (The notion of praising, which is in Piel, may also be that in Proverbs 31:31, תְּנוּ לָהּ “praise her;” to which, in the other hemistich, there answers וִיהַלְלוּהָ).

Piel, to praise, to celebrate, followed by an acc., Judges 5:11 followed by לְ 11:40. (Aram. תַּגֵּי, ܬܢܙܳ, i.q. סִפֵּר to narrate. Arab. ثنى IV. to celebrate with praise, prop. to utter voice.)

Hiphil, i.q. Kal. Hosea 8:9, אֶפְרַיִם הִתְנוּ אֲהָבִים “Ephraim has hired loves.”

Derivatives, אֶתְנָה, אֶתְנָן, and pr.n. יִתְנָן, יַתְנִיאֵל.
