שֹׁד , once fully שׁוֹד Job 5:21 (from the root שָׁדַד
(1) violence, oppression of the weak, act., Proverbs 21:7, 24:2 pass. Psalms 12:6, שֹׁד עֲנִיִּים “the oppression of the poor.” Meton. wealth obtained by violence, Amos 3:10.
(2) desolation, destruction, Job 5:22; Isaiah 51:19, 59:7 Jeremiah 48:3; Habakkuk 2:17, שֹׁד בְּהֵמוֹת “the devastation of wild beasts.” Specially, a devastating tempest. Isaiah 13:6, כְּשֹׁד מִשַּׁדַּי יָבוֹא “like a tempest shall it (suddenly) come from the Almighty.” Used in an imprecation. Hosea 7:13, שֹׁד לָהֶם “destruction (light) on them!”
