II. צפע (√ of following; compare Arabic cacavit, , Ethiopic excrement.).
צִפְעֹנִי (like יִדְעֹנִי) prop. belonging to a viper’s brood; hence a viper itself, Isaiah 11:8, 59:5 Proverbs 23:32. Plur. צִפְעֹנִים Jeremiah 8:17. LXX. (Isaiah 11:8, 14:29 ) ἔκγονα ἀσπίδων. See another etymology under the root צָפַע.-Aqu. βασιλίσκος. Vulg. regulus, whence J. D. Michaëlis understood the horned serpent, or cerastes.
