מִקְשֶׁה m. propr. turned work, or something rounded, from the root קָשָׁה No. II., i.q. fem. מִקְשָׁה. Isaiah 3:24, מַעֲשֵׂה מִקְשֶׁה “turned work,” in derision of the hair artificially twisted. The opinions of other interpreters are given in my Comment. on the passage.
I. מִקְשָׁה f. of the prec. turned work, of the golden candlestick, Exodus 25:31, 36 Exodus 25:36, 37:17, 22 Exodus 37:22; Numbers 8:4 of the silver trumpets, Numbers 10:2 of a column, Jeremiah 10:5 of the cherubim, Exodus 25:18, מִקְשָׁה תַּעֲשֶׂה אֹתָם “with rounded work thou shalt make them,” sc. the cherubim. They appear to have been of olive wood, and covered with gold from 1 Kings 6:23, compare verse 28 1 Kings 6:28 so that they are mistaken who understand מִקְשָׁה of solid gold, from the root קָשָׁה to be heavy, hard.
II. מִקְשָׁה for מִקְשְׁאָה, Arab. مَقْثَأَةُ f. denom. from קִשֻּׁא a cucumber; a field set with cucumbers, Isaiah 1:8.
