מַעֲשֶׂה m. constr. מַעֲשֵׂח, with suff. מַעֲשֵׂהוּ, plur. מַעֲשִׂים Genesis 20:9, etc.; and suff. מַעֲשַׂי Ecclesiastes 2:4, 11 a form which is also used with a singular sense (see מַרְאֶה and Hebrew Gramm. § 90, 9, note); Psalms 45:2, מַעֲשֶׂיךָ plur. Psalms 66:3, 92:6 sing., Exodus 23:12 מַעֲשָׂיו plur., Psalms 103:22 sing., 1 Samuel 19:4 מַעֲשֵׂיכֶם plur., and sing., Genesis 47:3.
(1) noun of action of the verb עָשָׂה, that which any one makes or does, das Thun, Gefchäft. Genesis 47:3, מַה־מַּעֲשֵׂיכֶם “what is your business?” 1 Chronicles 23:28, מַעֲשֵׂה עֲבֹדַת בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים (Berrichtung des Tempeldienftes) “performance of the Temple service.” Exodus 5:4, “why do ye call away the people מִמַּעֲשָׂיו from their business?” Ezekiel 46:1, יְמֵי הַמַּעֲשֶׂה “(six) days of business,” work; opposed to the sabbath. Hence used of the whole course of action, almost i.q. דֶּרֶךְ. Exodus 23:24, לֹא תַעֲשֵׂה כְמַעֲשֵׁיהֶם “thou shalt not act like them” (Gentiles); 18:20 Leviticus 18:3; Micah 6:16; Ecclesiastes 4:3, “who has not seen אֶת־הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הָרָע אֲשֶׁר נַעֲשָׂה תַּחַת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ evil course of action under the sun.” Absol. of an evil course of action, Job 33:17.
(2) a deed, an action (That)
(a) of God, Judges 2:10; Psalms 86:8.
(b) of men (Handlung, That), chiefly in a bad sense. Genesis 44:15, מָה הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר עֲשִׂיתֶם “what is this deed which ye have done?” Pl., Genesis 20:9; 1 Samuel 8:8; 2 Kings 23:19; Ecclesiastes 1:14. Absol. of an evil deed. 1 Samuel 20:19, בְּיוֹם מַעֲשֶׂה “in the day of that deed,” namely, when Saul sought to slay David. (Others take it to be, in the working day; opp. to the feast day.)
(3) work, which any one produces.
(a) of God. מַעֲשֵׁי יְדֵי יְיָ the things which God made with his hands, (fingers, Psalms 8:7), his works, (used of heaven, earth, animals), Psal. 8:7 19:2 103:22. In sing. מַעֲשֵׂה יְהֹוָה Isaiah 5:19, 10:12 28:21 Psal. 64:10 and מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי יְיָ Isaiah 5:12, 29:23. Psalms 28:5, work of God, specially used of the judgment of God against the wicked; compare פֹּעַל.
(b) of men. מַעֲשֵׂה יְרֵי אָדָם the work of men’s hands, often said of idols, Deuteronomy 4:28; Psalms 115:4, 135:15. Specially used of artificial work, as מַעֲשֵׂה חשֵׁב work woven in many colours, damask, Exodus 26:1, 31 Exodus 26:31מַעֲשֵׂה רֶשֶׁת net work, Exodus 27:4. On the other hand, 2 Chronicles 16:14, בְּמִרְקַחַת מַעֲשֶׂה with an artificial compound of spices. Once used of the work of a poet (ποίημα), Psalms 45:2.-Metaph. also of the fruit of anything. Isaiah 32:17, מַעֲשֵׂה צְדָקָה שָׁלוֹם “the work (i.e. the fruit) of righteousness (is) peace.”
(4) what is produced by labour, property, goods, i.q. מְלָאכָה No. 2. Isaiah 26:12, כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂינוּ “all our goods.” Specially used of fruits, corn, etc., Exodus 23:16 of cattle, 1 Samuel 25:2.
