מְחָא Chald. to smite, to strike, Daniel 2:34, 35 and often in Targg. (To this answers the Greek μάχομαι, μάχη; in Hebrew מָחָא, מָחָה, נָכָה.) Some have referred to this מָחֵא 1. מַחֵא Daniel 5:19 but this is part Aph. from חֲיָא keeping alive.
Pael מַחֵא id. followed by בְּיַד to strike upon one’s hand, i.e. to hinder, restrain. Daniel 4:32, “there is none who can strike upon his (God’s) hand, and say to him, What doest thou?” The same phrase in the Targums (Ecclesiastes 8:3, Targ.); and the Talmud is more usual for to restrain, to hinder, and in the same sense is used the Arabic phrase على يده ضرب, ضرب على يديه.
Ithpael, to be fastened upon with nails (Germ. angefchlagen werden), Ezra 6:11.
