II. כפר (√ of following).
כַּפֹּרֶת fem. a covering, from the root כָּפַר No. 1, only used of the cover of the ark of the covenant, Exodus 25:17, seq.; 30:6 31:7 בֵּית הַכַּפֹּרֶת the inmost recess of the temple, where the ark of the covenant was placed, 1 Chronicles 28:11 LXX. ἱλαστήριον (Vulg. propitiatorium; Luther, Gnadenftuhl) [English mercy-seat], as though it were from the signification of propitiation; see כִּפֶּר No. 2,. [Of course this is the true meaning and derivation; the mercy-seat was the place on which the blood of atonement was sprinkled before God.]
