חָרֵד fut. יֶחֱרַד
(1) to tremble, to be frightened. (The unused חָרַד prob. had the signification of terrifying, compare עָרץ, ἀράσσω.) Exodus 19:16; 1 Samuel 28:5; Isaiah 10:29 [“ascribed to the heart, 1 Samuel 28:5 ”]; followed by לְ of the cause, Job 37:1. Used in a pregnant sense, Genesis 42:28, וַיֶּחֶרְדוּ אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו לֵאמֹר “they were afraid (i.e. afraid they turned) one to another, saying.”
(2) Followed by אֶל prop. to fear for any one, i.e. to take care of him, 2 Kings 4:13 [“followed by אַחֲרֵי to follow any one trembling, 1 Samuel 13:7 ”].
(3) to come trembling, to hasten (compare חָפַז Niphal), followed by מִן from a place, Hosea 11:10, 11 Hosea 11:11לִקְרָאת to meet, 1 Samuel 16:4, 21:2.
Hiphil, to terrify, to make afraid, Judges 8:12; 2 Samuel 17:2; Leviticus 26:6; Job 11:19; Isaiah 17:2.
The derivative nouns follow with the exception of the pr.n. חֲרוֹד.
חָרֵד adj.
(1) trembling, fearful, afraid, Judges 7:3 followed by עַל, for that of which one is afraid, 1 Samuel 4:13.
(2) Applied to the fear of God and piety; reverence, Ezra 10:3, הַחֲרֵדִים בְּמִצְוַת אֱלֹהֵינוּ “those who fear (or reverence) the commandment of our God;” compare 9:4 Isaiah 66:2, חָרֵד עַל דְּבָרַי “who reverences my words,” followed by אֶל verse Isaiah 66:5.
