חוֹף , חֹף m. the shore, as being washed by the sea; from the root חָפַף No. II. to rub off, to wipe off, to wash; whence Arab. حَافَّةُ, حَفَفُ the coasts and shore of the sea. Of the same origin are سَاحِلُ and ܣܦܳܪܐܳ the sea shore, Genesis 49:13; Deuteronomy 1:7; Joshua 9:1.
